Coney Island Expansion Plan

Coney Island, after decades of neglect, is finally undergoing a resurgence. After Coney Island hit its all time low, when Thor Equities was going to shut down the amusements in favor of hotels, NYC stepped in.

Mayor Bloomberg then had the city purchase 6.9 acres in order to preserve the amusement area. An amusement company operator was brought in. For the first time in 80 years, Coney Island opened new roller coasters and other rides. The New York Aquarium, near Coney Island, is also expanding. But the city has even grander plans for the neighborhood. As stated by the Coney Island Development Corp, a number of new things are in the works. The amusement area will ultimately be expanded to 27 acres. The area has been rezoned for hotels and other year around entertainments such as movie theaters. 5,000 units of new housing is planned, of which 1,000 will be affordable housing. The area will get an indoor pool and other amenities in the form of a YMCA.

Coney Island still has beautiful beaches and excellent public transportation access. Check it out and be a part of its rebirth!
